“WRAN GIVE US OUR LAND”

In 1978, Premier Wran launched a landmark inquiry to explore implementing Aboriginal land rights. This was a pivotal shift—from debating whether to grant land rights, to how to do so effectively. The committee’s recommendations were groundbreaking, advocating land recovery, cultural compensation, and a three-tier community governance model.

The Act’s first claim was lodged in 1984—notably the earliest claim still pending resolution. As of 2020, there were still over 37,000 unresolved Aboriginal land claims in NSW, including that first 1984 claim—a situation described by advocates as a “national disgrace.”

Recently, a longtime outstanding claim—lodged in 1984 by the Brewarrina Local Aboriginal Land Council—was finally resolved, nearly 40 years later, through an Aboriginal Land Agreement returning culturally significant land.

Redfern’s role in the land rights struggle: In the early 1970s, Aboriginal activists established the Aboriginal Housing Company (AHC) after successfully lobbying to purchase housing on "The Block" in Redfern, creating one of the first urban land rights victories
