Original Poster - Be a Good Sport and Help Us - Tony Mundine Gymnasium 1985

This is the original poster featuring photography by Elaine Pelot Kitchener (birth name), Elaine Pelot Syron (later name).

Elaine was born in 1942. She is widely recognised and has developed a significant reputation as a photographer documenting diverse and often marginalised communities across Australia.

Tony Mundine Gymnasium was originally opened in 1985, housed in a repurposed shoe factory at the corner of Vine and Eveleigh Streets, thanks to the efforts of the Aboriginal Housing Company.

It was run by legendary Australian boxer Tony Mundine after his retirement, serving as both a fitness center and a beacon of hope for local youth.

Over decades, it produced a number of boxing and kickboxing champions at both the national and international level, while also fostering grassroots health and confidence among everyday community members.

The original Elouera Gym closed around 2016–2017 to make way for the Pemulwuy redevelopment of The Block.

A striking new facility, designed with public exposure in mind and equipped with modern amenities, reopened in 2022 near Redfern Railway Station as part of the renewed community precinct.

The Elouera Tony Mundine Gym isn’t just a workout spot — it’s a symbol of cultural resilience, community renewal, and access. From Tony Mundine’s guidance to the reopening embedded in urban regeneration, it stands as a powerful example of how spaces can inspire and uplift.
