Aboriginal Flag badge - small

Little Aboriginal flag metal badge/pin

Measures approximately 1.5 x 1cm.

The Australian Aboriginal Flag was designed in 1971 by Aboriginal artist Harold Thomas. The flag was originally designed for the land rights movement, and it became a symbol of the Aboriginal people of Australia.

The symbolic meaning of the flag colours:

    • Black: Represents the Aboriginal people of Australia
    • Red: Represents the red earth, the red ochre and a spiritual relation to the land
    • Yellow: Represents the Sun, the giver of life and protector

In January 2022 The Morrison government paid more than $20m to obtain the copyright to the flag, plus terminate commercial licenses owned by companies which had limited the reproduction of the symbol.

“In reaching this agreement to resolve the copyright issues, all Australians can freely display and use the flag to celebrate Indigenous culture,” Ken Wyatt, the federal minister for Indigenous Australians said.

“Now that the commonwealth holds the copyright, it belongs to everyone, and no one can take it away.”
