This hardwood hunting boomerang is painted by local artist John Rotumah and made by local craftsman Michael Walker.
Both John and Michael have been apart of our Planet Corroboree family from our beginning days back in 2002.
JOHN ROTUMAH
John discovered his passion for painting at just 18, inspired deeply by his mother and, later, by his own children. With over 30 years of artistic experience—25 of those as a professional—his work has travelled across the globe, resonating with people far beyond his homeland.
John is best known for his signature kangaroo sunsets, a vivid and recognizable feature that defines much of his artistic style. His cultural roots run deep: on his mother’s side, he belongs to the Bundjalung people from Fingal, a coastal community in northeast New South Wales. On his father's side, John proudly carries the heritage of his grandfather’s people from Rotuma Island in Fiji.
Working across various mediums, John's art beautifully blends tradition, personal storytelling, and a deep connection to Country and culture.
MICHAEL WALKER
These unique boomerangs come to us from Michael, a proud Bundjalung man who previously ran a boomerang factory in Kyogle for many years. Now based in Darwin, Michael returns to his Country annually—and each visit, he brings a fresh collection of handcrafted boomerangs. Once here, local Indigenous artists like John add their own touch, painting each piece with distinctive designs that reflect their cultural heritage and connection to the land.
Every boomerang is a collaboration—rooted in tradition, crafted with care, and finished with authentic Aboriginal art.
These boomerangs are all lacquered twice with a satin vanish to protect and preserve the wood and artwork.
