Painted Hunting Boomerang 31cm By John Rotumah

Authentic Aboriginal Hardwood Hunting Boomerang – Handcrafted & Hand-Painted

This handmade hardwood hunting boomerang is a stunning collaboration between local Aboriginal artist John Rotumah and Indigenous craftsman Michael Walker.

Each piece embodies authentic Aboriginal art, traditional craftsmanship, and a deep connection to Country. Both John and Michael have been part of our Planet Corroboree family since our early days in Byron Bay, back in 2002.

About the Artist – John Rotumah - From the young age of 18, John Rotumah discovered his natural talent for Aboriginal painting. Inspired by his mother and his children, John has been painting for over 30 years — 25 of those as a professional Indigenous artist. His artwork, which spans many mediums, has reached audiences around the world. One of his most iconic Aboriginal designs is the kangaroo sunset, a recurring theme that has become his artistic signature.

John’s mother’s family are Minjungbal people from Fingal, on the north coast of New South Wales, beside the ocean. His father’s heritage is from Rotuma Island, Fiji, and John proudly carries his father’s name. We’ve had the honour of showcasing and selling John’s original Aboriginal artwork since our beginnings — and we continue to buy directly from the artist, supporting him and his community.

About the Craftsman – Michael Walker- Each traditional boomerang is made by Michael Walker, a proud Bundjalung man and skilled Aboriginal wood craftsman. Michael previously operated a boomerang workshop in Kyogle, NSW, and now lives in Darwin. Every year, he returns to Bundjalung Country, bringing with him a new collection of handcrafted Australian hardwood boomerangs.

Once made, each piece is hand-painted by local Indigenous artists like John, who add authentic Aboriginal designs that reflect their Dreaming stories, cultural heritage, and connection to the land.
